I will talk about change regularly over the course of this blog activity, and change affects workflow, related practices, productivity and such. But, just to start the conversation I want to relate how I have seen change in something that I engage in when not working.
I have been helping a carpenter friend for some time in various projects. He acquires and uses new tools all the time. A while ago, he started using a pneumatic nail gun and it changed house construction by moving the critical path from hammering to sawing. You can put it up faster than you can cut it. I recently worked with him in building a deck. He has another new tool, an automatic screw drill. It replaced nails with screws in the floorboards and the once again change the process of construction. Now sawing and measuring are the critical path, not nailing.
Tools will change the workflow, whether in carpentry, product design, hardware manufacturing, etc.
