In recent days I have been again speaking with people about Lessons Learned, lessons learned databases, the use of wikis for creating lessons learned and other aspects on the topic.
I believe that thinking of Lesson Learned as a separate part of a work process is fancy. People just won't take the time to "fill in" a lesson learned after the work is done. There just isn't enough time that can be allocated to it.
I have written at length on the topic in the attached document.
In this paper I offer opinions
- that Lesson Learned must become a dynamic part of a work process,
- that lessons learned can be captured as a naturual part of the work process
- that an open issue list is a running tally of "lessons being learned"
- that if you do not capture and address lessons immediately then you will suffer as a business.
